Practice and lessons

Is the practice portfolio real money?

No. Practice cash has no real value, can't be deposited or withdrawn, and practice orders aren't sent to any market. They fill at the latest price shown so you can see how a position would have behaved.

How are practice payouts credited?

When an ex-dividend date passes for a stock you hold in the practice portfolio, the payout is added to your practice cash the next time the app refreshes, using the shares you held before that date. Turn on Settings → Reinvest Practice Payouts to buy more shares with each payout instead.

How do I start the practice portfolio over?

Go to Settings → Reset Practice Portfolio and pick $10,000, $50,000 or $100,000 in practice cash.

Where do lesson examples come from?

Each lesson ends with a figure built from current public market data, such as a company's latest payout or yield. Examples illustrate the concept; they aren't recommendations.

Getting started

How do I add a holding?

Open the Income tab and tap +. Search for the ticker or company name, then enter the number of shares, the price you paid and the purchase date. To add more shares later, open the stock's page and tap Add Purchase.

Can I try the planner without entering my own holdings?

Yes. When the Income tab is empty, tap Try a Sample Portfolio to add eight example purchases. You can delete them from each stock's page or with Settings → Delete All Holdings & Watching.

How do I edit or delete a purchase?

Open the stock's page, scroll to Your Position and tap the purchase. Change the values and tap Save, or tap Delete Purchase. To remove a whole holding, touch and hold it in the Income tab and choose Delete Holding.

How do I watch a stock I don't own?

Open its page from Discover or search and tap the star. Watched listings appear under Watching in Discover and in the Calendar.

About the figures

How are upcoming ex-dividend dates estimated?

Each regular payout from the past year is carried forward by one year, and newer payers use their typical interval. Companies announce their own dates, which can differ by days or weeks, so these dates are labeled Estimated until they pass.

Why doesn't projected income match what I received?

Projections use the latest regular payout (the 12-month average for ETFs) and the shares you hold today. Raises, cuts, special payouts, taxes, currency and your broker's handling can make actual income differ.

What do I enter if a stock split after I bought it?

Enter shares and price exactly as they were on the purchase date. FiCapinatro converts them using the split history, so share counts and payouts line up with today's basis.

What does "Yearly raises in a row" mean?

The number of consecutive calendar years, ending with the latest one, in which a company's regular payout went up and wasn't cut. It's counted from the available history, which for some companies starts after their record began, and it's shown for stocks only.

How are ETF payouts estimated?

ETF payouts vary from one payment to the next, so estimates for ETFs use the average payout of the last 12 months. Stock estimates use the latest regular payout.

Which listings are covered?

US-listed stocks and ETFs priced in US dollars. Prices can be delayed and some listings have gaps in older history.

What does the Tax on Dividends setting do?

It adds an after-tax line to the Income tab using the rate you pick. It doesn't change any other figure.
